WHAT THE SERVICE PROVIDES
The Mackay Women’s Centre is a safe and professional venue for workshops and activities that promote the Centre’s desired outcomes of Well Women, Safe Women, Smart Women and Creative Women.
Crisis responses, general support, information, referral and short-term counselling to women in a safe and confidential environment.
Pre and post abortion and pregnancy options counselling.
Advocacy for women, when necessary, to achieve positive outcomes.
Emergency relief – children’s clothing up to size 3, baby items and food vouchers (when funding is available).
Assistance to establish, facilitate and accommodate support groups for women.
Appropriate referrals when facing domestic, family and/or sexual violence concerns.
Support for young women to assist with their parenting and pregnancy issues.
Transport for women with pregnancy and baby issues (interagency support only – i.e. hospital, crisis response agencies, child protection, legal and advocacy services).
Pregnancy testing and counselling on result.
Written material, information and resources for professionals, community services workers, students and women in the community in relation to pregnancy, parenting, family relationship issues, health and wellbeing.
Identification of and assistance to address barriers to women’s access to adequate and appropriate healthcare.
Identification of and assistance to address, policy and procedural barriers to women and children’s access to safety.
Community education regarding the following topics: Presentation of Chronic Diseases mental health and wellbeing, sexual and reproductive health and Health Ageing.
We promote women’s health and emotional wellbeing through a variety of classes, social groups and workshops such as Chair Yoga, Tai Chi, Choir, Zumba, Walking Group, Book Club, the Mackay Active Women’s Club and the Sarina Active Women’s Club.
We offer free shower and laundry facilities to women.
We have computer facilities and internet access for women. Drop by anytime from 9AM to 4PM.
We often rely on community generosity and donations to help us provide items for emergency relief or charity drives. Unfortunately though we don’t have a large enough space to store multiple items – if you’re interested in donating items to the centre it is always best to contact them first to learn more about what items are in particular demand.
We run a volunteer program for those women in the community who are interested in donating their time to the Mackay Women’s Centre.
We have a large room for hire – perfect for your next Women’s Event!
